Hreflang Generator

Generate hreflang alternate link tags for multilingual websites. Add language and region codes with their corresponding URLs to help search engines serve the right content.

If your website serves content in multiple languages or targets different geographic regions, hreflang tags are essential for telling search engines which version of a page to show to users in each locale. Without proper hreflang implementation, search engines may show the wrong language version in search results.

Our Hreflang Generator creates the correct link rel="alternate" hreflang tags for your multilingual or multi-regional website. Simply add your language-region combinations and corresponding URLs, and the tool generates properly formatted HTML tags ready to implement.

Hreflang implementation is notoriously tricky because it requires bidirectional confirmation — every page must reference all its alternate versions, and every referenced page must reference back. Our tool handles this automatically.

Language Versions

How to Use This Tool

  1. 1

    Add language variants

For each language version of your page, add the language code (e.g., 'en', 'es', 'fr') and optionally a region code (e.g., 'en-US', 'en-GB').

  2. 2

    Enter the corresponding URLs

For each language variant, enter the full URL of that page version.

  3. 3

    Add an x-default

Include an x-default entry pointing to the page version shown to users whose language isn't specifically targeted.

  4. 4

    Generate and implement

Copy the generated tags and add them to the <head> of every language version of the page.

Best Practices

  • Always include a self-referencing hreflang tag on each page. The English page should reference itself in addition to all other language versions.

  • Use the x-default attribute for your fallback or language-selection page to handle users whose locale doesn't match any specific version.

  • Hreflang tags must be bidirectional — if page A references page B, page B must also reference page A. Missing return links cause hreflang to be ignored.

  • Use ISO 639-1 language codes and, when needed, ISO 3166-1 Alpha-2 country codes. For example: 'en-US' for American English, 'pt-BR' for Brazilian Portuguese.

SEO Tips

  • Always include an x-default hreflang for users whose language isn't explicitly targeted.
  • Use ISO 639-1 language codes (e.g., en, fr, de) and optionally ISO 3166-1 region codes (e.g., en-US, en-GB).
  • Hreflang annotations should be reciprocal — each page must reference all other versions.
  • Place hreflang tags in the <head> section or HTTP headers.
